Lake District Estates is a family owned business with its head office located in Kendal. The company owns and operates a selection of high quality and award winning tourist attractions, caravan parks, retail outlets and letting properties. Heritage and preservation are at the heart of the business, that operate two of the Lake Districts best loved attractions Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway and Ullswater ‘Steamers’.

This exciting opportunity to join Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway arises as the current General Manager steps down after 40 years of service. This railway is one of the major tourist attractions in Cumbria, situated in a quiet, rural area of West Cumbria.

As General Manager you will be responsible for the day to day operation of the railway and for the implementation of the strategies, policies and objectives set out in the business plan. You will report to the Board of Directors/CEO and have direct line responsibility for 4 HODs and ultimate responsibility for a team of up to 50 employees and a large number of volunteers. You will engage, lead and inspire this large and diverse team to deliver an outstanding customer experience to every visitor!

Key responsibilities of the role include;

 

  • Manage all operational and commercial activities
  • Develop, lead and inspire a team of employees and volunteers
  • Work with the Chief Executive to keep the five year plan current and develop new ideas.
  • Take responsibility for Health and Safety of the entire railway operation
  • Ensure the railway continues to be recognised as an award winning attraction and maintains its excellent reputation locally, nationally and within the industry.
  • Prepare, in conjunction with department managers and the group Finance Manager, an annual budget and take full responsibility for profitability.
  • Work with the group marketing department to devise and deliver appropriate marketing plans.

 

We are looking for proven management experience within a similar heritage/visitor attraction organisation.  You will have a high level of commercial awareness with the ability to develop commercial opportunities, full EBITDA experience with the skills to balance the operational needs of the business with maximising standards and income opportunities whilst keeping an appropriate control of costs.  An understanding of engineering and an interest in heritage locomotives is a given.

Remuneration – £40 – £45k + bonus + benefits
